Tutorial 13:

Investigating the mechanism of health effects of aerosols by field and laboratory studies

Yinon Rudich, Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot, Israel

Abstract: This tutorial will introduce investigations to understand the health effects of aerosols, which is among the most significant contributor to the global burden of disease. We will cover evidence to the health effects caused by of exposure to particulate matter and will describe process level studies for understanding how these effects develop. We will emphasize connections between the evolving chemical composition of atmospheric particles and their biological effects upon exposure to various cellular model systems.

Short bio: Yinon Rudich is a Professor at the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at the Weizmann Institute.  He has served as President of the Israel Association of Aerosol Research and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Geophysical Research – Atmosphere. His research interests include heterogeneous atmospheric chemistry and physics of organic aerosols and of mineral dust, optical properties of aerosols, ice nucleation, health effects of aerosols, and the microbiome of the atmosphere.
