The Editor-in-Chief of Aerosol Science and Technology (AST) will present the AST outstanding publication award,  https://www.aaar.org/awards/annual-awards/ast-outstanding-publication-award/. It consists of a certificate for each co-author, one plaque to be used at the discretion of the co-authors, and monetary award of $2000.In addition, it is announced in AS&T along with the rationale for its choice. The announcement is usually made at the annual AAAR meeting: exceptionally this year it will also be presented at the International Aerosol Conference IAC 2022.

Finally, the Local organizing committee of the IAC will bestow the Early-Career Poster award, and it will sponsor an Aerosol-Art Inspired competition.

1. Early-Career Poster award

The award: The European Aerosol Assembly (EAA) through its five Working Groups, will present the Early-Career Poster award at the 11th International Aerosol Conference to be held in Athens on September 4th – 9th, 2022.

Motivation: To help early-career scientists to develop their full potential, to establish themselves in the aerosol-science community and to start their career, and to recognize exceptional research coupled with artistic ability and communication skills.

Eligibility: The presenting author of the poster should be an Early Career Scientist. An Early Career Scientist is defined as a student, PhD candidate, or practising scientist who received their highest certificate (e.g., BSc, MSc or PhD) within the past five years. The five-year period can be extended to allow for periods when the scientist was not working in science because of, but not limited to, caring and/or parental responsibilities, disability, personal illness, community obligations or national service.

How to apply: Poster authors may apply by sending an email (by August 28th, 2022) to the coordinator of the Early-Career Poster award committee specifying: (1) the poster abstract identifier, (ii) the name of the presenting author clearly specifying early-career level , and (iii) a pdf copy of the poster.

The submitting author gives the 2022 IAC organizing committee the permission to publish the awarded poster in the conference and HAAR sites and related sites and newsletters.

Selection criteria: The Early-Career author should be present at the poster session and discuss/present the work to interested participants, if the author attends the conference physically. If the author has opted for virtual presence via an e-poster, the author must prepare and upload a 2-3 minute presentation. The posters will be evaluated according to

        1. Poster design: maximum 5 points
        2. Clarity of presentation: maximum 5 points (if the poster is presented virtually, clarity of the accompanying video)
        3. Scientific content: maximum 10 points

The award will be given according to the number of points assigned to each poster. The number of awards given, usually 5-10 appropriately divided among the five Working Groups, depends on the number of submissions. The awards will be presented at the conference. The award includes a diploma and a pecuniary sum (100 Euro). The award will be given to the submitting authors who must be an Early Career Scientist, as previously defined.

Selection committee: The selection committee will consist of at least one member from each EAA Working Group and at least one member of conference local organizing committee.  Each poster will be evaluated by at least two committee members. Poster award applicants should send the requested information to Yannis Drossinos (yannis.drossinos@gmail.com), the local coordinator of the award committee by August 28th, 2022.

2. Art and Science: Aerosol-inspired Art Competition

The 11th International Aerosol Conference invites submissions of art works inspired by aerosol science and technology. Photographs, paintings, computer-generated images, collages, videos, installations or any other art form featuring or related to aerosol particles and their interaction with the environment are welcome.

Manifest your creative side and participate.

Art entries will be displayed during the conference. At most 30 art pieces will be displayed. If necessary, a selection of the most appropriate works will be made.

Submissions should be the original work of the artist(s). At least one of the artists should  be a registered attendee at the conference. For organizational reasons, please indicate your intention to participate (specifying the art form) by June 30th. While this is not required, it would be highly appreciated. Similarly, it would be preferable that art works arrive in Athens by August 31st. Please contact the Science-and-Art committee for mailing or shipping instructions.

Submissions should include a list of contributing artists with their affiliation, a title, and a brief description of the submission (60 words maximum).

The submitting artist gives the 2022 IAC organizing committee the permission to publish their work, physically and online, during the conference, to upload it onto the HAAR and IAC 2022  site and related sites and newsletters.

Three awards to the best entries will be given: first price is 200 Euros, second 150 Euros, and third 100 Euros. The selection will be through voting of the public. We suggest that the award criteria be: (1) Relevance to the topic; (2) Originality; (3) Aesthetics.

For any questions please contact the Art-and-Science coordination committee. Please note that the role of the committee is purely procedural: they will not be directly involved in the awards.

Art-and-Science committee members: Mihalis Lazaridis (lazaridi@mred.tuc.gr), Alexandros Papayannis (apdlidar@mail.ntua.gr), Eleni Papaioannou (eleni.papaioannou@certh.gr), Athanasios Konstandopoulos (agk@auth.gr), and Yannis Drossinos (yannis.drossinos@gmail.com)
